Individual or Family Insurance
This type of policy is written for individuals and or families that do not have access to the more liberally written Group or Employer Sponsored Health Insurance.
Available individual policies include: Indemnity Plans (go anywhere, Calendar year deductible), Point of Service Plans (richer benefits if used within network) and HMO plans (network caregivers must be used).
Know that individual medical insurance applications will be underwritten medically. In other words, one must apply based on prior medical history and inquiries will he made about lifestyle choices such as smoking. As insurance companies are not fond of "buying claims"; applications are typically declined if prior history is much out of the ordinary and they sense that ongoing care will be required for "a condition".
Also know that generally speaking, individual policies typically do not cover "pre existing" conditions. A good example would he maternity. Although the policy may technically cover maternity; if you apply and do not disclose that you currently are pregnant coverage will not he extended to you.
Self employed individuals should evaluate the Medical Savings Account when considering the purchase of health insurance. The MSA allows individuals to fund the deductibles and out of pocket expenses via a tax deductible "account" owned by the Individual. By having this funding vehicle available, the actual policy deductible can be raised significantly and thus lower the premium.
